My Journey

From mind to paper and back again.

Activity 2.10

on September 29, 2009

Alicia couldn’t wait to join the RAF, it had been her dream ever since she could remember. Her school studies and college courses had all been geared towards this moment.

She grasped the envelope close to her chest as she laid the rest of the mail onto the table for her parents.

‘Is that it?’

Her mum placed her toast back on the plate. Alicia nodded.

‘I think so.’

‘Open it then.’ Her dad gave her a nudge. She took a knife and opened the envelope using the blunt edge. Her heart would stop,

she knew it. She couldn’t look. Alicia passed the envelope to her dad.

‘You read it Dad. I can’t.’

Just as nervous as his daughter he drew the paperwork out. This was it. His little girl was leaving home and this letter would tell him when. He breathed deeply and began to read out loud.

‘Dear Miss Newhall, I am pleased to inform you blah, blah, blah,’ he scanned the rest of the letter. ‘You must arrive at Royal Air

Force Halton no later than ten o’clock on the morning of Wednesday 26th November.’

’26th November?’ Her mum quizzed.

‘Yep that’s what it says here.’

‘But that’s only four weeks away. Get dressed love, we need to go and get the things you need.’

Her mum started bustling around her and shoed out of the kitchen to get dressed despite her protests.

Alicia couldn’t wait to join the RAF. It had always been her dream. Everything she had done was geared towards it. Holding the envelope to her chest she put the rest of the post on the table and sat down.

She took a knife and opened the envelope using the blunt edge.

‘You read it Dad, I can’t.’

She passed him the letter and tensed waiting to find out her fate.

Just as nervous as his daughter, he pulled the paperwork out of the envelope, took a breath and began to read aloud.

‘Dear Miss Newhall. I am delighted to inform you. Blah, blah, blah.’ He stopped to read the letter quickly. ‘You must arrive no later than ten in the

morning on Wednesday, 26th November.’

‘Yep. Says it here look.’

‘But that’s only four weeks away. Go get dressed love. We need to go and get all the things you’ll need.’

Her mum bustled around the kitchen and hurried her out to get dressed.
