My Journey

From mind to paper and back again.

Bawtry Squadron Enrol 27 Cadets – my PR

on December 22, 2008

Wednesday 24th September saw Hayfield School near Doncaster get some unusual visitors in the form of Flt Lt Mark Harrison and Instructor Cadet Flight Sergeant Mark Harbon. The pair were there to introduce the pupils of year 9 to the Air Training Corps. The visit attracted a staggering 37 new recruits for the squadron. Some two months later, on Sunday the 14th December, 27 of the new cadets were formally enrolled by the Squadron’s Commanding Officer, Flt Lt Mark Harrison at an event at the squadron headquarters on Park Road in Bawtry. All of them have also completed the First Class training programme and received their badges and certificates during the ceremony.  There was also a special award given to Cadet Andrew, who has received the Cadet of the Month for all her hard work in her First Class training and participation in other activities.

Cadet Andrew said: “Since joining the squadron I have had a really good time and made some new friends as well!”

Since the first evening the new cadets have been attending regularly twice a week and studying a variety of subjects to achieve their first class award covering subjects such as The History of Flight, History of the RAF and Basic Navigation to name a few. They have also been learning field craft skills and 23 of the 35 have also taken the British Heart Foundation Heart Start course and will be receiving their certificates shortly.

The Squadron meets at Park Road, Bawtry, on Wednesday and Friday evenings between 7.00 and 9.15pm. We welcome new cadets between 13 and 17 years old and adult volunteers of any age. Activities include flying, gliding, shooting, sports, camps and many more. Please visit us at the Squadron or call 01302 711783 for more information.
