Showing Not Telling

He felt tired.

His yawn seemed to last for minutes rather than a few seconds as he covered his mouth with one hand and lazily rubbed at his eyes with the other

She loved him.

Her eyes shone whenever she looked at him. Whenever they touched her heart skipped a beat. There was a constant smile on her face whenever they were together.

They loathed one another.

The air was palpable when they were in the same room together. Only putting up with one another when they were at work because they were on the same team. They never spoke away from the office.

The children were bored.

Most of the children in the class were still working on the activity on the whiteboard. One or two though sat fidgeting or drawing obscene pictures in the margins, tapping their pens against the table and whispering under their breath while they waited for the next exercise.

Grandmother came home drunk

It was ten o’clock Saturday night and she’d been to bingo with her friends like always. We could hear the scratching of the key across the lock where she was trying to fit it into the door. When she finally did manage to get into the house and came upstairs to give us a kiss goodnight the smell of whiskey was so strong it was nauseating.
